Introduction

Mell Square, a key retail destination in Solihull, needed a large-scale compliance upgrade to improve both safety and the visitor experience. The centre required modern acoustic and mechanical solutions to reduce noise, improve air quality, and meet regulatory standards – all while minimising disruption to tenants and shoppers during a busy trading period.

Our Solution

Premier’s Building and Maintenance team delivered a complex programme of works, focused on ceiling baffles and smoke extraction systems in Poplar Way. The ceiling baffles were chosen not only for their compliance benefits but also for their ability to enhance the space with a clean, modern look. Behind the scenes, new smoke extraction ductwork was designed and installed, covering more than half of the centre.

Services Delivered:

  • Design and installation of ceiling baffles in Zones 1 & 2
  • Installation of new smoke extraction ductwork
  • Electrical and lighting upgrades to complement the new design
  • Coordination with tenants to minimise disruption to retail activity
  • Compliance-driven works to meet standards such as BB93

Our team worked closely with Colliers, represented by Nick Yates and Lucy Williams, as well as a trusted network of contractors and suppliers. This included Connect Fire, Rexel Lighting Design, JUST Interiors, Connected Electrical, MT Maintenance, Compco, and Black Pennie. Their expertise was key to delivering such a technically demanding project.

We Delivered

  • A full ceiling baffle installation across Poplar Way, improving both acoustics and aesthetics
  • A new smoke extraction system designed by Premier’s Building Services team, enhancing safety and compliance
  • Significant progress delivered to tight deadlines while maintaining an active retail environment
  • A collaborative approach with Colliers, external contractors, and suppliers to ensure seamless delivery

The Impact

The transformation at Poplar Way has created a safer, more comfortable, and more attractive environment for both retailers and shoppers. Noise levels have been reduced, air circulation improved, and compliance standards exceeded. The project demonstrates Premier’s ability to deliver large-scale, complex works with precision and collaboration, while keeping disruption to a minimum.

"“We’re grateful to our external contractors and suppliers – including Connect Fire, Rexel Lighting, JUST Interiors, Connected Electrical, MT Maintenance, Compco and Black Pennie. Their persistence, commitment and diligence have been vital in helping us reach the first-phase target on such a complex project. I’m proud to be leading this work and look forward to sharing further progress as the project develops.”"
